Aurangabad, a city that unfolds layers of history with every step you take, has a captivating tale that goes back centuries. Nestled in the heart of India, this city’s origins trace back to the quaint village of Khadki. The name Aurangabad, resonating with the grandeur of the Mughal era, was bestowed upon it by the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. However, the city’s roots delve much deeper into time, reaching back to the ancient era of Buddhism.
Let’s start with an interesting historical tour to see Aurangabad’s amazing development from a humble village into a strategic powerhouse.
The year 1610 marks a pivotal moment when Malik Ambar, the prime minister of the Kingdom of Ahmednagar, laid the foundation of a town at Khadki. Under his astute leadership, the city flourished and evolved. Malik Ambar, the ruler of the Deccan, played a crucial role in shaping Aurangabad between 1604 and 1610.
Fast forward to 1626, and Fatehpur emerged as the new name for the town, courtesy of Malik Ambar’s son, Fateh Khan. The strategic significance of Aurangabad didn’t escape the eyes of Mohammad Bin Tughlaq in the 14th century, who contemplated relocating the capital city, Delhi Sultanate, to Fatehpur. Situated at the heart of India, Aurangabad provided a safer haven against the relentless armies of Afghan and Central Asian raiders.
A significant turning point occurred in 1634 when Aurangzeb assumed the role of the Governor of Deccan and chose Aurangabad as his base. In 1653, Aurangzeb, now the ruler of the Deccan kingdoms, officially christened the town as Aurangabad. The city’s strategic positioning became pivotal in Aurangzeb’s efforts to quell the rising power of Shivaji.
The chapters of Aurangabad’s history continued to unfold after Aurangzeb’s demise in 1707. The Nizam of Hyderabad took control of the city and held sway until it became an integral part of Maharashtra in 1956.
